About Coach Johnson

Coach Johnson began his basketball journey at Lee Senior High School in Sanford, NC, and went on to play at both Virginia Union University and the University of North Carolina. He also competed internationally for two seasons with Olympic Team Bosch in Germany at the semi-professional level.

His coaching career launched in 1998 with Lee County Parks and Recreation, where he won state championships in 1999 and 2004 and served as a multiple-time All-Star Head and Assistant Coach. He continued as Assistant Coach at Overhills High School for three seasons before taking over as Head Coach at Northwood Temple Christian Academy, where he earned both a conference championship and a JV title.

From 2004–2007, Johnson served as a recruiter for Richard Bland College (VA) and later as an assistant coach at Southside Virginia Community College. In 2008, he expanded his influence on the game by founding the Durham Kings, a semi-professional basketball team focused on talent development and community engagement.

Coach Johnson’s leadership blends experience, vision, and faith—anchoring a basketball program that prioritizes the whole person, not just the athlete.
